Flights

Flying is the fastest way to get somewhere when traveling a great distance. This method of travel has become more and more popular over the years, and is also a more safe way to travel.  The traffic of flights is controlled by air traffic controllers who help maintain separation, in order to prevent a collision.  They are employed by the FAA, (Federal Aviation Administration). This job has become more and more difficult over the years, as air traffic has become more and more congested.  More than 87,000 flights are in the skies in the United States on any given day.  But, only about a third of those are commercial. When flying , you often experience turbulence. Turbulence is air movement that can be caused by several different things, including mountain waves, cold fronts, or storms.  They will cause the airplane to shift, and extreme turbulence can cause the aircraft to lose control.  Many times, turbulence can not be detected by the radar. Airsickness is another things that might be experienced by flying.  It is considered motion sickness, and includes symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, headache,  and loss of appetite.  These effect can be minimized by sitting in the area over the wings, which offer the smoothest ride, eating crackers, and drinking a carbonated drink. Many people also experience mild to extreme sinus pressure while flying. This is due to the continuously changing pressurization of the cabin during ascent and descent.  Wearing Earp chewing gum can help to alleviate this problem. You can also take a mild pain reliever to help with the discomfort.

Flight attendants

Flight attendants are there to help make your flight as comfortable as possible and to help ensure your travel safety in flight, and during boarding.   The training for a flight attendant ranges from around 6 weeks to 6 months. There is at least 1 flight attendant for every fifty passengers aboard, by regulation. Most airlines also specify that flight attendants must be at leant 5 feet 3 inches tall, so they can safely reach the overhead equipment. You will notice that at the beginning of every flight, your flight attendants will explain the safety rules for the flight. They will outline the uses and locations of the oxygen masks, and floating devices. The will also explain the procedures that need to be followed in the event of an emergency, showing you which exit you will need to use.  Your flight attendant will help you with loading your carry-on baggage, and making sure it is loaded properly and secured.  They are required to perform cabin checks every 30 minutes, and are responsible for making sure the smoke detector is working properly, and the bathrooms are well stocked. They are also trained for many health emergencies that could occur with the passengers, such as cardiac problems, or  injuries. Flight attendants also provide you with refreshments during the flight, which is also prepared by them.  They will assist with the disposal of the leftover waste.  Your flight attendant will bring you pillows, and blankets upon request and usually alcoholic beverages for a small fee.  They will also provide you with magazine, head sets, and newspapers. On International flights, many of the flight attendants are bi-lingual or multi-lingual, so they can communicate with passengers from many different countries. They are also responsible to distribute customs forms that you will need when traveling abroad.  Flight attendants work very hard and are a major part of every flight. For every flight that goes smoothly, there is an attendant who has done a good job with the duties assigned to them.

Flight Carrier

When looking for a flight, you must choose your flight carrier.  There are many carriers to choose from. The leading flight carriers include, but aren’t limited to American Airlines, Delta, Continental, Lufthansa, and United.  Each airline has it’s own benefits, and finding your favorite can be difficult to do. The best way to choose a flight carrier is by doing a little research.  Destination is a big factor in choosing when airline is best for you. If you constantly travel to a certain place, it would be a great idea to find a flight carrier that makes regular stops to that area at the best rate. For example, some have more flight coming in and going out of the Houston International Airport, rather than DFW, and vice versa.  You might also want to check the safety records of the flight carrier to find out whether they have high standards, and history of safety. This information can be found simply by doing a search online. If the safety record makes you uncomfortable, look into choosing another carrier.  Many people also decide who they want to use for the flight carriers based on the mileage rewards they can receive by becoming a member of the frequent flyer programs. When signing up for a frequent flyer program, they can receive airline miles that can be used for a number of different things, such as complementary upgrades, cruises, hotel stays, and even free flights.  Not all flight carriers have an airline miles program to sign up for, and each one is different from the others. So, that is something to consider of you want to choose a carrier. These programs help the carriers, because passengers are more likely to choose an airline that they are registered with so they may receive or redeem they miles.

Airports

An airport is the place where all types of aircraft, such as airplanes, and helicopters arrive and depart.  This is also where the aircraft receives it’s maintenance. The take off and landing area is called the runway, which can be anywhere from 3,000 to 7,000 feet long.  Those who are familiar with flying know that finding your way around a large airport can be very difficult. Larger airports have several terminals, including those for departures, arrivals, international and domestic flights. When flying out, or picking up someone out of a larger airport, it is best to do a little research on the airport, and find out which terminal you need to be at. When using a smaller airports, you will not have this problem. Smaller airport generally have just one or two terminals and one runway. When arriving at an airport for departure, you will first have to check in. This is where you will pick up your ticket, and check any bags they you don’t want to carry on. After this, you will make your way to security, where any carry on luggage you have will be checked, and you will go through a metal detector.  Once you are through security, you can walk around, shop or have lunch until your flight is boarding. Many airports have lots of shops to entertain you while you are waiting, and you can buy souvenirs from the area you are in. There are also many V.I.P. clubs you can relax in if you are an elite member, of V.I.P. member of the frequent flyer program. These areas usually offer you complementary snacks and coffee, and wifi for your laptop. When it is time to board your will hear an announcement that your flight is boarding and you will need to make your way to the gates of departure. 

Aircraft types

There are so many types if aircraft it‘s almost impossible to list them all,. There are airliners, which include the Boeing 747 and  757. There are helicopters, which consist of the Bell 412, Cargo aircraft, twin pistons, executive jets, and turbo props. There airliners are the most popular aircraft, and can be used for just about any kind of flight.  This type of aircraft has the highest passenger capacity. Helicopters, also a very popular method of air travel, is the quickest and most convenient way to travel by air for a relatively short distance. This aircraft is often used for travel from one hospital to another, for travel to a remote location, or to travel when working offshore.  Cargo aircraft is used to carry just about any type of cargo instead of passengers. Cargo aircraft look distinguishingly different from other aircraft. The wings are set higher, so that the cargo can be loaded more easily. Twin Piston are aircraft that hold just a few passengers and are made for shorter flights. This type of aircraft is much more economical than airliners. Executive jets can be used for longer flight, and are a quicker way to travel.  This is a more expensive flight, and often is used to carry wealthy or business people. Turboprops are aircraft that are used for relatively shorter flights, because they use a gas turbine to drive the propeller. There are many different types of turboprops out there.  When you are choosing to fly, consider the distance you are going and the cost of the flight. There are aircraft for any trip you could possibly want to take.


Economy class

When flying, most people choose to fly economy class. Economy class, which is also called coach, is the basic flight service for passengers. The cost is significantly lower for economy class  than for other flight classes.  In economy class the atmosphere is more casual, and you are more likely to deal with more noise, since there are many more passengers flying in the economy class. On some aircraft, economy class is the only class available. When you are flying economy, you can expect to receive all the basic services, such as refreshments, drinks, coffee, head sets, pillows and blankets. You may have to wait a while to get these things since the flight attendant will be helping several people at the same time. The isles in economy class are not very wide, and they are somewhat difficult to maneuver around.  The seats are also not too wide or comfortable.  In economy class, there are usually three seats on each side of the isle, depending on the size of the aircraft. When buying your ticket, you can usually choose where you would like to be seated from the seats remaining in your selected class at the time of purchase. You might consider whether you would like to be close to a restroom, near the isle, of close to the window.  When seated by the window in economy, you have more trouble getting to the restroom if you have to walk around other passengers, but you will have a view of the landscape or clouds below. When choosing the isle your are more free to move about, but are often brushed by other passengers as they are passing by.  If you are going to fly economy class, you should decide ahead of time what you think is best for you, and go that route. 

Business class
You may choose to fly business class. Not all airlines have a business class, but for those that do, the service is beyond excellent. If  you have booked a business class flight, often times, you will have special access to airport lounges before your flight ever takes off. These lounges offer comfortable seating, and resting areas, newspapers, and refreshments. You can also expect exemplary service, including the privilege of being seated first, and getting to depart the plane first as well. The eliminates the time you would spend waiting in line.  In business class, have a lot more space to relax and the chairs are so much more comfortable. In business class, there are not 3 seats next to each other, there are only  two, and sometimes just one. This gives you room to stretch and move around. The seats are also much wider, as well as the isles. You are also given a bit more privacy, and it is much quieter. Since most of the other passengers are seated in a completely different area, the noise level is much lower. There are usually not a lot of children flying business class either, since flying business class with a family can be very expensive. You are always served first, and you are given complementary alcoholic beverages, and the meals are much better. The cost of flying business class is quite high, compared to the economy class.  It can be  more than three times as much as the price of a coach ticket. But, for many people, it is worth the cost.


First class

First class is the most expensive class to fly in, but also the most luxurious. The first class area is typically located in the front area of the aircraft, and is separated usually by a curtain from business, and economy classes. If you decide to fly first class, you are in for a very nice trip.  You should expect to be pampered the for the entire duration of the flight, since first class is highest, and most premium class available. With a first class flight comes first class service and all the privileges of business class. You will be seated first, and allowed to leave first, which can be very helpful, especially if you are on an international flight, and need to get through the immigration lines quickly. You will also have access to special lounges where you can relax and enjoy complimentary refreshments before your flight departs. Another plus, when flying first class, is that if you  are sleepy or just want to rest, you can lean your seats back much further than other flight classes, and in some cases, all the way back.  The seats are also wider and have more leg room than the business class flights.  You will also experience better meals with nicer plates, such as china, if you are flying first class.  Some first class flights even offer private suites with beds and a selection of wines.  Though the pampering of first class is great, many people and airlines are questioning whether it is worth it or not. Many airlines are considering removing first class from being an option all together since the price is around three times the cost of economy class. However, if you have the means to travel first class, you will definitely see the difference in service.
 
Charter flights
 Charter flights are flights that were made mainly for mass tourism, and are used mainly to carry those who are traveling to popular tourist destinations around the world. These flight cannot be ordered in the traditional fashion, rather one must go through a travel company or service to get tickets to for these types of flights.  Many times, these charter flights are booked by a large group of people who are vacationing in the same area, maybe for a wedding, or a sports team. They are also used by people who are just wanting to tour an certain area, or about to go on a cruise. Charter flights are often sold as part of a package deal. If you pay one big price with the flight included, it will often be a charter flight. These flights are usually cheaper than other flights. Because of this, however, the chartered flights usually need to run on around 100% occupancy.  These charter flight companies can be somewhat unreliable. There have been many problems with canceled flights and even companies going bankrupt causes vacationers to be left stranded.

More recently I have visited a few websites that have had the most annoying ads ever on them.  When you visit the site, and you decide you want to leave afterwards, you type another address in the URL box, and hit enter. Well, these sites somehow stop you from navigating away, and send a pop up that looks like a chat box, that has "someone" talking to you, asking if you need help signing up..... 

Ok, that is super annoying.  When I type in another address, that means I want to leave.  It means you had your chance to impress me and you didn't, and I'm not going to join your site....! ok! That's all for now.

I don't know why I can't seem to get rid of my chest congestion. It's been about 2 weeks now, and I can't get rid of it. This is so annoying. I have been unpacking all my things, and washing my clothes today. I am so ready for things to go back to normal. I still have so much to do before I get done, but eventually it will get done. I've been sick for the past week, and I am so ready to get well.
